CELEBRATING NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH: Honoring Our Roots in McAllen

As a proud native of McAllen, TX, and someone deeply connected to our rich Hispanic heritage, National Hispanic Heritage Month holds a special place in my heart. It’s a time to celebrate the diversity, history, and incredible contributions of Hispanic communities across the U.S., and it reminds us why community and culture are at the heart of everything we do here in the Rio Grande Valley.

A Month-Long Celebration of Culture and History

Each year, from September 15th to October 15th, we come together to honor the traditions, achievements, and stories of Hispanics whose roots span across Spain, Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. With over 65 million Hispanics in the U.S., we represent the fastest-growing ethnic group, adding vibrant colors, flavors, and traditions to the American fabric.

Did you know National Hispanic Heritage Month wasn’t always an entire month-long celebration? It began as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968, thanks to Mexican American U.S. Rep. Edward R. Roybal, and it wasn’t until 1988 that President Reagan extended the celebration to a full month. This expansion gave us more time to reflect on the importance of our contributions and allowed others to better understand our impact on this country.

Why September 15th? A Nod to Our Independence

The timing of National Hispanic Heritage Month isn’t random—it’s deeply rooted in the fight for freedom. September 15th marks the anniversary of “El Grito de Dolores,” the historic cry that sparked Mexico’s war for independence from Spain in 1810. On this day, Central American countries like Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica also celebrate their independence. Mexico follows with its national holiday on September 16th, and Chile commemorates its independence on September 18th.

The timing allows us to honor the bravery of our ancestors while celebrating the rich blend of cultures that makes the Hispanic community so special.
